Your life changes instantly following a car accident. You experience intense emotional and physical pain. There is also most likely significant damage to your vehicle. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and confused by what actions to take next. Our auto accident attorneys want all drivers to remember these important tips after an accident.
“It might be difficult but try to stay calm and collect your thoughts,” Scott Mann says, auto accident attorney. “If it’s possible, carefully move your car out of traffic to avoid another accident. Call 9-1-1 if you, your passenger, or the other motorist is injured and needs medical assistance. Motorists should also call the police after a collision.”
If you have been the victim of a car accident, please call Mann Wyatt Tanksley Injury Attorneys for a consultation. Our auto accident attorneys are honored to serve you!
You and the other driver need to exchange information after the collision. This information is necessary for getting fair compensation from an insurance company, or in a settlement if the case goes to trial. Write down their name, contact information, driver’s license number, make and model of vehicle, and their insurance carrier and policy number. Also write down the time of day, weather conditions, and any other detail of the accident. If possible, take photos of any damage and of the accident scene.
“Do not leave your vehicle unless you are absolutely positive that it is safe to do so,” Mike Wyatt says, auto accident attorney. “You don’t want to risk being hit by oncoming traffic. Also don’t try to move if you or a passenger has been injured. Wait for the paramedics to arrive to avoid further injuring yourself.”
While it might be your first reaction, never apologize when the accident wasn’t your fault. This can be viewed as an admission of guilt by the other driver’s insurance company. It could result in you being denied coverage. It’s also important that you do not reveal sensitive insurance policy information. Don’t share your coverage limits or deductibles with the other driver. Only leave the accident scene after gathering information about the other driver and vehicle.
